Me voy por Costa Rica

I leave the country February 27th, for 27 months in Peace Corps Costa Rica: my assignment, Rural Community Development.

I begin my journey February 24th... I have a few days of orientation, in Washington DC, where I will meet up with roughly 50 others who will also begin their journey! I leave for 3 months of in country training, after which i will be an official volunteer and be sent to my rural community of less than 1,000 somewhere in the country!

I know many of you are wondering what the is Peace Corps:

The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, more than 187,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.

Today's Peace Corps serve in 73 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Collaborating with local community members, Volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach and community development, the environment, and information technology.

My Assignment: Rural Community Development:

1. Organizational Development:
Creating and strengthening of local associations, development committees and other community groups.
2. Increasing economic opportunities in rural areas:
Targeting women’s groups and rural youth.
3. Enhanced Education:
Through enrichment activities with children, youth and adults.
Teaching English as a second language.
Developing Environmental Education Programs.

It is well known, that your Peace Corps experience, is what you make of it.
And I am so excited about this opportunity God has given me!

An adventurous journey soon follows~
